ASUU proffers solution to ongoing strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has observed that resolving its ongoing strike action could be done by the adoption of the transparent payment platform, University Transparency and Accountability Solutions (UTAS).

Dr Socrates Ebo, Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State chapter, in a statement, lamented that the deep-rooted penchant for corruption within government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment, saying that UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform.

According to him, the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), has been decisively proven to be a porous, easily compromised payment platform.

The chairperson opined that the IPPIS has been ineffective in curtailing waste of resources, stressing that on the contrary it has been used to pad payrolls and used to effect all manner of fraudulent deductions from workers’ salaries.

He explained, “We definitely can’t continue this way, the adoption of a transparent payment platform is critical to resolving the current impasse in the nation’s university system. UTAS has been proven to be a flawless payment platform but the deep-rooted penchant for corruption in our government ethos is all out to frustrate its deployment.”

He stated that no lecturer under IPPIS can say for certain what his salary is, pointing out that what they find queer is the insistence of some government officials on the use of IPPIS when it is proven to be compromised and corruption-prone.

The statement noted that UTAS has been designed to be corruption-proof, asking why the government would not be interested in a payment platform that is cheap, 100% corruption-proof, and 100% indigenous.

It stated that if IPPIS was corruption-proof, the accountant-general of the federation would not have been able to loot N80 billion and N70 billion.

It said the statement claimed of savings by IPPIS are fraudulent, saying that IPPIS arbitrarily cuts workers’ legitimate salaries to cover its heavily corrupt and inefficient tracks to create the false impression of efficiency and savings.

The statement explained that the recently paid minimum wage arrears are a case study as many persons have not been paid till date, stressing that in his branch alone, 40 persons have not been paid while the Minister of Labour thinks that they were paid three years arrears.

He added that what they received was a mere nine months without any clear template on how the payments were made, stressing that nobody knows what they are entitled to, nobody can ask questions to anybody and even the university bursars can’t explain how the payments were made and what was paid.

He suggested that the government should get serious with education in the country, saying that in the 60s and 70s, the universities ranked high among their peers with scholars all over the world coming to their universities to teach and study.

He lamented that today, the universities are so dead that even their politicians no longer believe in them as they now send their wards abroad for the same education, saying that they are the people killing education in the country as ASUU is the only bastion of defence for quality education in this country.

The chairperson noted that when education is destroyed, healthcare is also destroyed, and doctors are taught new procedures and skills at the universities, not at Aso Rock Clinic or National Assembly, pointing out that eventually, everyone gets sick and everyone eventually suffers consequences of the dearth of educational infrastructure.

NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA SPEAKS ON PETER OBI.

I am proud of my brother, Gov.  Peter Obi. I entitle my talk on him: ‘He came, he saw, he conquered’. His governance of Anambra State was full of experiences worth-sharing and indeed worth capturing in a book (if not books). It is evident that he really conquered. It deals a lot with his Excellency’s approach to governance over the years. His ways compel us to appreciate his personal qualities, his quiet strength, his passion to make a difference, his dignified and dignifying carriage and conduct, and his never-say-die spirit. I also respect him for what he achieved as a Governor of one of the toughest States in the country – Anambra.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote said that even people in Yobe know that it is not easy to govern Anambra State.  I agree with him. In fact the totality of Nigeria knows how tough Anambra State is; such that until Obi, no leader succeeded to offer them exhilarating leadership.

In Anambra, a State I am personally proud of, we have many intellectuals; those who are hardworking and the wealthiest of men and women. We call them big men and women in Nigeria, and yet among these personalities, Peter Obi has carved his own unique path – defined by humility, hard work and results. The results are clear. As we all know, we are actually using him as example in so many areas. You will be surprised to know that some people used to say ‘No, keep away from Anambra State,’ we now say ‘Go and see what is being done in Anambra State.’ At the Federal level, his policies have become very good examples for the Educational Sector. Even if you do not like his approach and methods, you cannot quarrel with the results he has achieved.  He returned schools to their original Church owners, collaborated with organisations that offered value to the State, acknowledging where the state did not have capacity. Instead of beating ones head against the wall and repeatedly making the same mistakes, he decided to make a bold turn. Today, the sterling results are evident.

I so envy what Peter Obi has been able to do here because he gained total control of the State after the initial storm. Many of the policies he tried here are the things we should be doing at Federal level, both with our finances and policies, but, of course, we are totally hampered by the kind of structure we have. You know when Peter Obi tried to change the schools, he did not just throw money at them, he was very careful about how he spent the money. He only spent when he was sure he was going to get results and sustainable improvement.

On the network of roads he constructed, I want to acknowledge the fact that few of the roads were completion of roads Senator Chris Ngige started; even though when you go there now, everybody calls them Ngige road.  It does not matter to him that people would not attribute them to him, as long as the roads serve Ndi-Anambra. Elsewhere, some will abandon them and embark on their own projects. I think that he deserves a big applause. He also initiated and completed many road projects that today Anambra is regarded as having impressive network of roads.

He attracted serious investors into the State. I knew when SABmiller came, he brought them to my office and they probably felt they do not know how much money they could make here. They made an investment of about N20 Billion Naira equivalent. Very soon their turnover and profit was doubled and   tripled beyond expectations. They are now expanding in the state, building more factories and thinking of other investments they can make. There are many other such examples with companies like Distell, Glaxo Smithkline Beecham, Neimeth Pharmaceuticals, among others.

What I love and admire most in what Governor Obi has done in Anambra State is the fact that he did not neglect the indigenous people who have invested here for a long time. If Innoson Motor Manufacturing Company is known by everybody today at the Federal level, it is simply because Governor Obi made him a showcase. Such patronage is worthy of emulation. He has kept on soliciting Federal support for him, as he himself has supported him through various ways.  We have to remember such investors and support them because they invested here first. That is what Obi has done and I commend him for that.

The development-oriented approach to governance which he has followed while pursuing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is again very important.  I will tell you that we have special commendation of the World Bank, and other international agencies have endorsed the way Anambra State pursued its MDGs programmes. This deserves another round of applause.

I see Peter as the true face of Igbo man, given the qualities for which he is known – the humility, the hard work and the prudence. He does not spend easily. He is very intelligent and extremely hardworking. These are quintessential qualities Igbo people are known for.

As the Poet, Virgil says, love conquers everything (Omnia Vincit Amor), Peter conquers people by love. He can love you to death. If he has an enemy or somebody in conflict with him, instead of approaching them belligerently, he approaches them with respect and love so that even if they do not want him, they are won over. I think we should all look at those qualities. That does not mean that when the time comes to be tough, Peter runs away. I am sure people can tell stories of occasions Peter had been very tough. I know he has even bulldozed houses of people who did not do the right things. In Nigeria, you have to combine being kind and good with also being very tough.

By the sheer power of his personal examples, Peter tells us eloquently the way we should behave and the way we should govern.  Though Anambra State has one of the tightest Federal allocations, he has been able to save a lot of money for the State. He has shown so much in development which some other States that receive more cannot boost of.  Most importantly, he is leaving Anambra State with no debt but with huge savings. Let me tell you, at Federal level, he is one of the few Governors that came out clearly in support of our stand to save. We don’t just spend everything. Every smart and sensible person knows that no matter your income, even if it is one naira, you must keep something aside. You never know the day you will need it for your children. So, on his own, he has saved money for the State and I am very envious. Yes, we managed to save a little at the Federal Level, just a little, but we can do so much more. Even the one we managed to save, we have been spending, because somebody does not believe Federal Government should save anything.

I want to strongly commend Obi for what he has done. Now, do not be deceived by Peter Obi. When you ask him who he is, he would say I am a trader. Maybe he is, but he is also one of the most enlightened Governors in the country today. He has a strong intellect combined with practical grasp of real situation. The thing with Peter is that he can play both sides.  It is not for nothing that the President invited him, among just the two governors that are Honorary Advisers on Finance. He is equally a Member of the Economic Management Team.  When Peter needs to show the intellectual side, he does, but when he needs to show the practical side, after we would have talked too much theory, he will say, ‘Wait, I talked with traders in Onitsha yesterday, and this is what they said.’ So he combines a strong intellect with very good grasps of realities on the ground. He is a good economist. Peter is a true leader and we always call on him at Federal level when we need examples.

I want to say something about the incoming Governor. I hope you will continue to uphold the relationship at the Federal level. We always advice Anambra to be part of Federal programmes. The one we are working on now is the one on housing. We have launched the National Mortgage and Re-finance Corporation which by end of June, will  start pumping money into primary Mortgage institutions that actually lend to the  people. We need to give hope to the young people in our country. So this Country has to change. To put a programme like that in place we invited fourteen states and Anambra was one of the first to enroll as a pilot state. The state has to meet certain criteria in terms of fastness in allocating land titles, working with us on land infrastructure so that we can get builders to come and build. This programme is going to take off by the middle of this year and we will want Anambra to be an example.

All in all, by giving his End of Tenure Report, Gov. Peter Obi has shown another example in good governance. We applaud him and wish him well.

Excerpts from the extempore speech by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala during the “End Tenure Report” by the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Peter Obi.

Motivation

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others and if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.

Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish yourself. It’s what you do for others.

#mindhealthmaker

You become very powerful when you learn how to control your feelings.

Never let success go to your head and never let failure go to your heart.

Don't waste your time with explanations: people only hear what they want to hear.

Once you feel avoided by someone, NEVER disturb them again.

Welcome To Bayern, Mane😍

Bayern Munich have completed their move for Sadio Mane — but the striker insists he will always be Liverpool's No1 fan.

The Senegalese star, 30, enjoyed a successful final campaign with the Reds, winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup as Jurgen Klopp's men chased an unprecedented Quadruple.

He also triumphed with his homeland in the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in their 4-2 shootout win over Egypt in the final.

But his future gradually appeared to lie away from Anfield after Bayern expressed an interest.

And the Bundesliga giants have finally landed their man, handing Mane a three-year contract after hammering out a reported £35million deal to prise him from Merseyside.

The delighted ace said: "I'm really happy to be at Bayern.

"We spoke a lot and I felt big interest from this great club right from the beginning, so for me there were no doubts.

"It's the right time for this challenge. I want to achieve a lot with this club. During my time in Salzburg I watched a lot of Bayern games — I really like this club.

"But I will watch Liverpool, for sure, because I am going to be Liverpool’s No1 fan forever.

"I just want to say good luck to them and I have an eye on them.

"And for sure they will be even better because I know the boys — great players, great talent, great maturity and attitude, so of course, Liverpool will always stay even better."

Mane excelled after joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2016, bagging 120 goals in 269 appearances for the club.

Picking up six trophies during his time at Anfield, he was instrumental in Klopp’s quest for silverware.

But with Mane entering the final year of his contract, the Premier League and Champions League runners-up decided to allow their No10 to move on, having already signed Fabio Carvalho and Darwin Nunez to reinforce their attacking options.

Boss Julian Nagelsmann will hope Mane can help Bayern return to the top of the pile in Europe and secure an 11th consecutive domestic title.

Club CEO Oliver Kahn said: "We are delighted we've been able to recruit Sadio.

"With his outstanding performances and his great successes at the highest international level over many years, there are very few players like him in the world.

"We're sure Sadio will delight our fans in the coming years with his spectacular style of play.

"He's ambitious and eager to win more titles. This package is very strong. With players like him at Bayern, all the biggest goals are possible."

HOW TO MAKE GROUNDNUT OIL FOR

How to make groundnut oil at home

1. Get enough groundnut

Buy from the market, you can buy a small paint bucket depending on how much oil you'd be needing, 3 cups of groundnut should give you about 1 cup of oil.

2. Clean up the groundnuts

This is the most time consuming part unless you bought the groundnut that has already been shelled and cleaned up, you'll have to break the hard shells yourself and bring out the groundnut.
Then remove the back or peelings  to easily do this you can fry at low heat the for like 5 minutes or wash them in cold water then warm water.

3. Soak the groundnut

Put the washed groundnut in a clean bowl, then pour warm water on it. Allow the groundnut to soak in warm water for 10-15 minutes, so that the groundnut get little soft.

4. Grind the groundnuts

Drain the water, then take the groundnut to a local mill to blend, let them preheat the machine before pouring the groundnut. But if you have a blender, blend the groundnut until it becomes smooth like butter.

To make it less difficult to blend, add 1 or 2 tablespoons of warm water but not too much water so it doesn't make it watery.

5. Refrigerate

Pour the peanut paste into an air-tight container and cover the lid tightly. Leave the container inside the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. Do NOT disturb the container for rest of the time, after 24 hours or more, some of the oil have risen to the top of the container.

6. Separate the Oil

After the oil has risen to the top, you have to separate the oil from the paste, scrub the oil on top  into a separate bowl.

There is still much oil in the paste, so strain the paste thoroughly for some oil to come out or better still, fry the paste until all water dry off  and you will see your oil still coming out, remove the oil and use a clean cloth or napkin  and squeeze the fried paste for more oil to come out.

7. Store the Oil

Pour your oil in clean and unused bottle, Close the lid tightly and keep.
